Does knee osteoarthritis occur in everyone as they age?

Knee osteoarthritis is a condition that must be evaluated together with imaging findings and symptoms such as pain, swelling, and actual walking/stair-climbing function.

Imaging findings may differ from symptoms.

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative change characterized by pain and stiffness that occurs as the joint cartilage gradually wears away. However, even if X-ray shows narrowed joint spaces, there may be cases with almost no pain; conversely, severe pain may occur even in early-stage findings. Therefore, the degree of pain is not judged based solely on imaging findings.

While these changes are commonly observed with aging, the degree of pain and functional limitation varies from person to person.

Common Symptoms

When climbing or descending stairs, especially when going down, pain in the front of the knee often worsens, and swelling with a heavy sensation is common after prolonged walking or activity. There are cases where temporary stiffness occurs in the morning or when standing up after sitting for a long time, but it resolves with movement.

The sound itself in the knee is a common phenomenon; what is more important is whether it occurs along with pain, swelling, or functional limitation.

If a rapid assessment is needed

If the knee suddenly becomes very swollen and feels very warm without an injury, infection or another inflammatory condition should be checked. Prompt assessment is also needed if the joint locks completely and cannot straighten, or repeatedly gives way enough to cause falls.

If the calf suddenly swells and breathing becomes difficult, do not assume it is a knee problem; seek emergency evaluation.

Evaluation and Examination

We examine the nature of pain, the timing of swelling, and changes in climbing stairs or walking. We check knee bending and straightening, tenderness and swelling, thigh and buttock strength, and balance.

Imaging examinations are performed selectively when symptoms persist or when a change in treatment direction is needed, for example, when there is no response to conservative treatment or when surgical treatment is considered.

Treatment Options

When there are no warning signs and management of knee joint movement and muscle function is needed, Chuna manual therapy and acupuncture combined with pharmacopuncture can be considered. We do not guarantee that it will increase joint spacing or regenerate cartilage.

Strengthening the thigh and buttock muscles, managing weight, and adjusting activity levels may also help manage symptoms. If pain is severe and function is significantly limited, other treatment options should also be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does knee osteoarthritis worsen with exercise?

Appropriate-strength strength and functional exercises may actually help manage symptoms and are different from pushing oneself to the limit while enduring pain.

Can cartilage injections be beneficial?

It may help ease symptoms, but it is not a treatment that guarantees cartilage regeneration. In particular, caution is warranted with steroid joint injections, as research suggests that frequent repetition can lead to greater cartilage loss. Functional recovery can be planned with Chuna manual therapy and acupuncture to regain muscles around the knee and joint movement, alongside exercise.

Can I receive Chuna manual therapy for degenerative knee problems?

Evaluate joint and surrounding muscle function, which may be considered based on the condition; however, it is not applied uniformly to all patients.
