Which movements make the knee hurt?

Knee pain may feel fine on flat ground but become noticeable when walking down stairs, rising from a chair, or after walking for an extended period. Therefore, identifying not only the painful area but also which movements cause discomfort serves as an essential starting point for clinical evaluation.

What is checked at a Korean medicine clinic?

A Korean medicine doctor checks when the pain began, whether there was a fall or twisting of the knee, and whether swelling or local warmth was present. Depending on the patient's condition, bending and straightening movements of the knee and local tenderness are evaluated, and functional movements such as walking or standing from a seated position can also be examined.

Based on examination findings, necessary Korean medicine therapies such as Chuna manual therapy, acupuncture, moxibustion, and pharmacopuncture are selected to fit the patient's current state. Along with treatment, previously uncomfortable movements during walking or on stairs may be reviewed, and the care plan may be adjusted accordingly. Examination and treatment methods vary depending on the patient and the clinic location.

Information to prepare before consultation

It is helpful to organize the location of pain, any swelling, uncomfortable movements, and how the injury occurred, and to wear clothing that makes it easy to examine knee movement.

When prompt or emergency evaluation is needed

If, following major trauma, the knee is severely deformed or you cannot bear weight on the affected leg, prompt evaluation is required. If severe joint pain and swelling are accompanied by fever, seek an evaluation at an emergency department without delay.
