Which movements cause discomfort?

When shoulder pain occurs while dressing or reaching for items on high shelves, it creates frequent inconvenience in daily life. Whether pain differs when raising the arm forward versus to the side, and whether it worsens when lying down at night, provide important clues to the condition of the shoulder.

What is checked at a Korean medicine clinic?

A Korean medicine doctor checks how the pain began, whether there was an injury, and whether the pain is severe enough to wake you at night. The range of motion is examined when the patient moves the arm independently and when the examiner assists the movement; if needed, strength around the shoulder and symptoms extending from the neck into the arm are also evaluated.

Depending on the examination findings, Korean medicine treatments such as Chuna manual therapy considering movement of the shoulder and surrounding areas, acupuncture, or pharmacopuncture can be planned. The treatment methods and intensity are chosen to match the patient's condition and clinical findings, and actual availability can be confirmed with each clinic location.

Information to prepare before consultation

It is helpful to remember the specific directions that hurt most when lifting the arm, night pain, the timing of any injury, and previous treatments.

When prompt or emergency evaluation is needed

If shoulder pain is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or cold sweats, or if the shoulder is severely deformed following major trauma, seek an evaluation at an emergency department immediately. Prompt medical attention is also needed if you cannot lift your arm or notice severe swelling after an injury.
