Examination and Evaluation
What is evaluated when neck pain and arm numbness occur?

Evaluating neck and arm symptoms together
If your neck is stiff and numbness radiates past the shoulder into the arm or hand, it is important to examine the painful areas and movements together. Even when discomfort around the neck and symptoms in the arm and hand occur at the same time, the pattern varies from person to person.
What is checked at a Korean medicine clinic?
At a Korean medicine clinic, you will be asked when the pain began, whether it is on one side or both, and which fingers feel numb. We also check how symptoms change when turning your head or bending your neck forward, sitting for long hours at work, or lying down.
During the physical examination, movement of the neck and shoulders is assessed, and if necessary, sensation and strength in the arms and hands and changes in daily movements are checked together. Based on examination findings and the patient's condition, appropriate Korean medicine treatments such as Chuna manual therapy, acupuncture, or pharmacopuncture are chosen, and changes in previously uncomfortable movements are evaluated after treatment.
Information to prepare before consultation
It is helpful to note the location of numbness, postures that aggravate symptoms, movements where you feel weakened strength, and previous test results or treatments.
When prompt or emergency evaluation is needed
If strength in the arm or hand suddenly drops or worsens rapidly, if changes in bowel or bladder control occur, or if symptoms appear after major trauma, immediate emergency evaluation is required. Symptoms such as clumsiness in the hands or changes in gait also require prompt medical attention.
