How is carpal tunnel syndrome distinguished from hand numbness?
In this article
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when a nerve passing through a narrow passage at the front of the wrist is compressed, causing numbness or tingling and changes in sensation around the thumb, index and middle fingers. Repetitive wrist use, pregnancy, and various factors such as thyroid disease or diabetes may be involved.
Whether the numbness is limited to a specific finger rather than affecting the entire hand, and whether it worsens at night, are important characteristics.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms can include waking at night with hand numbness that feels better after shaking the hand, difficulty with buttons or chopsticks, and frequently dropping things.
If symptoms progress, the muscles under the thumb on the palm may noticeably shrink, so this change should also be checked.
Cases that need to be distinguished from other causes
If the little finger is also numb, consider the possibility of nerve issues in the elbow or neck rather than just the wrist. Numbness occurring simultaneously in both hands and feet should not be assumed to be a problem limited to the wrists.
If hand weakness occurs rapidly along with numbness, a prompt neurological evaluation may be necessary.
Evaluation and Examination
We examine the fingers where numbness occurs, along with night/day patterns, repetitive movements, and underlying conditions. We examine wrist flexion and extension, finger movement, grip strength, and sensation.
If symptoms persist or muscle weakness occurs, you may consider consulting with medical institutions that can perform additional tests such as nerve conduction studies.
Treatment Options
Chuna manual therapy may be considered when fracture and infection have been ruled out and management of connected movement in the wrist, elbow, and shoulder along with muscle function is needed. The goal is not to forcefully bend the wrist.
Adjusting your position so the wrist does not bend too much at night, and adjusting repetitive activities and rest breaks, may help manage symptoms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is surgery absolutely necessary for carpal tunnel syndrome?
In mild cases, conservative management with observation may be appropriate; if muscle weakness progresses, surgical treatment can be considered.
Can this occur during pregnancy?
Yes, symptoms may occur due to fluid retention during pregnancy and may improve after childbirth.
Is Chuna manual therapy helpful for carpal tunnel syndrome?
If muscle weakness is not severe and movement restriction is involved, it may be considered depending on the condition.
